          Early advice to voters, from the past

          Commonly sold outside churches, the “Kalendariong Tagalog” was started by a Filipino writer named Honorio Lopez in 1897.

          According to some historical books, he was imprisoned by the Spaniards after the first edition of the Kalendariong Tagalog was published, due to its strong nationalist bent.

          However, it survived the tests of time and fortune, becoming popular among the masses due to the fact that like the famed “Poor Richard’s Almanac” of American statesman Benjamin Franklin, the “Kalendariong Tagalog” provided sage advice on everything from politics and society to even love life.

          In 1922, when the Philippines held the first elections for its Senate and House of Representatives under the American occupation, Honorio Lopez included in that year’s edition of the “Kalendariong Tagalog” some advice for voters – advice that, more than a century later, still carries weight as we all begin preparations for the 2025 polls:
