          Biography of Mariano Azuela

          Mariano Azuela was a Mexican writer and novelist known for his realistic novels depicting contemporary Mexican life.

          He was born on January 1, 1873, in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico, to a small landowner family. Although he graduated from the medical school at the University of Guadalajara in 1899, Azuela had shown an interest in literature and politics from a young age.

          Literary Career

          By 1910, when the Mexican Revolution began, Azuela had already published three novels that exposed the corruption in society.

          However, he did not receive much recognition as a writer at that time. It was after the defeat of Pancho Villa's army, where Azuela served as a military doctor, that he wrote his best novel, "Los de abajo" (The Underdogs), which was published in parts in a Spanish-language ne
