Ghiberti was born in Florence, Italy, and initially trained as a goldsmith under his father, Bartoluccio Ghiberti.
However, he soon became interested in sculpture and began studying under prominent artists of the time, such as Donatello and Filippo Brunelleschi. Ghiberti’s early works showed a strong influence from the Gothic style prevalent in Florence at that time.
